Hey Mama! Sew Along – Block 4

I hope you’re all enjoying the sew-along! I hope you’re keeping up, too! Don’t worry if you aren’t. The blocks will stay up for a while after the sew-along is finished.

If you’re new to quilting, I hope you’ve enjoyed learning some new techniques. This month’s block combines two techniques we’ve used in previous blocks: 4-patches and half-square triangles. It is called Jacob’s Ladder, and here are the instructions:  (Just a reminder, the finished block will be 9″, which is 9 1/2″ before finishing.)

Hey Mama! Sew-Along Block 4

Choose 4 fabrics: 2 backgrounds, 1 gray and 1 red.

Cut: (Cut sizes include a 1/4” seam allowance.)

Background #1: 1 strip, 2” x wof*

Red: 1 strip, 2” x wof*

Background #2: 2 squares, 3 7/8” x 3 7/8”

Gray: 2 squares, 3 7/8” x 3 7/8”

*wof = width of fabric

1. Sew the background #1 strip, 2” x wof to the red strip, 2” x wof. Press toward the red. Cut the strip into 2” units. Cut 10 units.

4. Pair the 2 gray 3 7/8” x 3 7/8” squares with the 2 marked background #2 squares. Sew 1/4” on both sides of the marked line. Cut on the marked line and press toward the gray. Makes 2 half-square triangle units per square, 4 total.
