Hey, everyone! Here is the first block for my Hey Mama! sew along! First, a couple of explanations: I tried to take pictures of each step, but forgot many times! So, I’ll have diagrams where I’ve forgotten to take photos. Also, I’ll always have a pdf download for each pattern that you can print off. All seams are 1/4″, and cut sizes reflect that. Some blocks have traditional names, which I’ll share, but if I don’t know the traditional name, I won’t share it!
So, here is the block, double 4-patch. This is a very simple block, and the finished size is 9″. (It will be 9 1/2″ after piecing it together.)
Choose 3 fabrics.
Cut: (Cut sizes include a 1/4” seam.)
Fabric #1: 2 squares, 5” x 5”
Fabric #2: 4 squares, 2 3/4” x 2 3/4”
Fabric #3: 4 squares, 2 3/4” x 2 3/4”
1. Sew each of the 4 squares of the #2 fabric to each of the 4 squares of the #3 fabric. Press toward the dark.
2. Sew 2 units from step 1 together to form a 4-patch. Press using the “split seam” method.
3. Sew a 4-patch unit on the right side of each #1 fabric square. Press toward the large square.
4. Sew each of the units from step 3 together to form the block. Press using the “split seam” method.
And that’s it! You have your first block completed! This one is the simplest one, so gear up for next month, as they will get progressively harder.
Here’s the pdf version for printing. (This includes the instructions for split seams.)
