Hey Mama! Sew Along – Finishing Instructions

banner

You’ve waited, you’ve wondered, and here it finally is! The finishing instructions for the Hey Mama! quilt. There are a couple of notes I’ve made in the pdf version of the pattern; First, the materials list had the corner squares and star points in the same fabric. I didn’t have enough of any single fabric to do that, so my corner squares are a different color than the star points. Either way looks good, though. Second, my outer border fabric is directional, so I cut the side borders lengthwise before cutting the strips for the top and bottom borders widthwise.

So, without further ado, here is my finished quilt:

I hope you’ll feel free to finish your quilt in whatever way you’d like! Here are the instructions for my finished quilt.

Hey Mama! Finishing Instructions

Prepare the blocks using each individual pattern. Finished blocks should measure 9 1/2” x 9 1/2”.

Cutting Instructions

From the gray sashing fabric cut:

31 rectangles, 3 1/2” x 9 1/2”

From the stripe fabric for sashing squares* cut:

20 squares, 3 1/2” x 3 1/2”

From the light red for star points* cut:

40 squares, 2 3/8” x 2 3/8”

124 squares, 2” x 2”

5 squares, 4 1/2” x 4 1/2”

*note: For the fabric requirements, I had the corner squares and the start point fabric the same fabric. When I constructed the quilt I used two different fabrics for these. That was merely because I ran out of enough of any one fabric for them to be the same.

From the red inner border fabric cut:

14 rectangles, 2” x 9 1/2”

4 squares, 2” x 2”

5 strips, 1 1/2” x WOF

From the multi border print cut:

6 strips, 5 1/2” x WOF *

*note: my fabric was directional, so I cut the side borders lengthwise, then cut the remaining strips needed widthwise.

Sashing and Inner Border Assembly

1 Using a pencil and ruler, draw a diagonal line from corner to corner on the wrong side of each light red 2” square*. Place a marked square on one corner of a gray 3 1/2” x 9 1/2” rectangle, right sides together, as shown. Sew on the drawn line. Trim the seam allowances to 1/4”; press the seam allowances toward the triangle. Repeat to sew a square on each corner of the gray rectangle. Make 31 sashing rectangles.

*note: I used the Angler 2 tool to do all the triangles, instead of marking them with a pencil.

Finishing the Quilt

1 Prepare the backing fabric. Layer the backing, batting, and quilt top. Baste the layers together, and hand or machine quilt as desired. (If  you are taking your quilt to a long-arm quilter, you don’t need to baste the layers together.)

2 Cut and prepare approximately 250” of 2 1/4”-wide bias binding and sew the binding to the quilt.
