Hey Mama! Sew Along Block 9

Hey, all! After this block, we’re 3/4 of the way through our sew along! I hope you’re enjoying it. So the good news (apparently) is that there are not flying geese in this block. We are going to be adding quarter-square triangle units to your repertoire, however.

This month’s block is probably my favorite block ever. It is Ohio Star, and I’m not sure why I love it so much, I just do! I’ve always loved it. So, the instructions are pretty simple for this one. You’ll have one seam that you sew across the diagonal, so be careful about that. (As always, just a reminder, the finished block will be 9″, which is 9 1/2″ before finishing.)

Hey Mama! Block 9

Choose 3 fabrics.

Cut: (Cut sizes include a 1/4” seam allowance.)

Fabric 1 (background):

2 squares, 4 1/4” x 4 1/4”

4 squares, 3 1/2” x 3 1/2”

Fabric 2:

2 squares, 4 1/4” x 4 1/4”

Fabric 3:

1 square 3 1/2”

1. With a marking pencil, mark a diagonal line on the wrong side of the 2 background squares, 4 1/4” x 4 1/4”.

2. Pair the 2 gray 4 1/4” x 4 1/4” squares with the 2 marked background squares. Sew 1/4” on both sides of the marked line. Cut on the marked line and press toward the gray.

3. For each half-square triangle unit, cut along the opposite diagonal. This will give you 4 halves that will match up into two quarter-square units. Sew, matching the centers. Makes 4 quarter-square units.

4. Arrange the quarter-square triangles, the red square, 3 1/2” x 3 1/2”, and the background squares, 3 1/2” x 3 1/2” as shown in rows. Sew the 3 blocks in each row together. Press as shown. Sew the rows together.
