Hey Mama! Sew Along – Block 8

It’s that time again! I hope you’re keeping up, and that you enjoyed seeing some blocks done in different color ways last month. Today’s block is called Grecian Square. It isn’t too complicated, but you do have to do a little bit of sewing on the bias for this one. Just sew carefully, and try not to stretch the piece along the bias.

So, here is the block and the instructions. ((Just a reminder, the finished block will be 9″, which is 9 1/2″ before finishing.)

Choose 4 fabrics.

Cut: (Cut sizes include a 1/4” seam allowance.)

Fabric 1 (background):

1 square, 5 3/4” x 5 3/4”, crosscut diagonally twice

2 squares, 3 1/8” x 3 1/8”, crosscut diagonally once

Fabric 2:

1 square, 3 5/8” x 3 5/8”

Fabric 3:

1 strip, 2 1/8” x wof

Fabric 4:

1 strip, 2 1/8” x wof

1. Sew the fabric 3 and fabric 4 strips together lengthwise.

2. Cut the strip created in step 1 into 4 segments, 3 5/8” wide.

3. Sew a background 3 1/8” triangle to each of the gray sides of the units made in step 2, with the bias next to the block.

4. Sew a unit made in step 3 on each side of the 3 5/8” fabric 2 square. Press toward the square.

5. Sew a background 5 3/4” triangle to each side of a unit made in step 3, with the 90º angles toward the unit sides as shown. Repeat with the other unit from step 3. Press toward the background.

6. Sew each triangle unit to the top and bottom of the unit made in step 4.
