Hey Mama! Sew Along – Block 7

Welcome back to the sew-along! I thought you might enjoy seeing some of the blocks that my friends have made, to see different color options. First is Jane’s blocks. She is using fabric from her stash, which have been turning out lovely, don’t you think?

Jerrie is using Miss Kate fabric by Bonnie & Camille from Moda. So cute and summery!

This month’s block is called Dutchman’s Puzzle. We will be doing flying geese again, so if you have your Flying Geese x 4 ruler, you’ll want to use it for this block, too! Again, you don’t have to have this ruler. I’ll tell you how to do it without.

So here are the instructions: (Just a reminder, the finished block will be 9″, which is 9 1/2″ before finishing.)

Choose 3 fabrics.

Cut: (Cut sizes include a 1/4” seam allowance.)

Fabric 1 (background):

8 squares, 3 1/8” x 3 1/8”.*

Fabric 2:

1 square, 5 3/4” x 5 3/4.”*

Fabric 3:

1 square, 5 3/4” x 5 3/4.”*

* If you are using the Flying Geese x4 ruler, use line “G”.

1. With a marking pencil, draw a diagonal line from corner to corner on the wrong side of each “background” 3 1/8” square.

2. Lay two marked squares on opposite corners of the “fabric 2” 5 3/4” square, right sides together. Sew 1/4” from the drawn line on both sides. Cut on the drawn line.

3. Lay a marked “background” 3 1/8” square on the “fabric 2” corner of each half from step 2, right sides together. Sew 1/4” from the drawn line on both sides. Cut on the drawn line; press. This will give you four flying-geese units.

Here are my flying geese units: (which, by the way, you could arrange these in this way, or any other way you like.)

6. Sew a “fabric 2” to the bottom of a “fabric 3” unit, repeat to make four sets.

7. Arrange the sections as shown, and sew two sections together, then sew the center seam. Press using a “split seam” method.

As always, you can download the pdf version for printing and easier sewing. Enjoy! If you’d like to send me photos of your blocks, please do! I’ll include them in next month’s post.
