Hey Mama! Sew Along – Block 10

We’re already up to block 10 of the Hey Mama! Sew Along. I hope you’ve been enjoying the blocks. We’ve already learned several techniques, and now we’ll just be expanding on what we’ve learned.

This month’s block is Log Cabin with a Chain. I’m pretty sure you’ve heard of the log cabin block, this just adds another dimension with the chain running through it. This block is simple squares and rectangles, so not too tricky! Here are the instructions: (As always, just a reminder, the finished block will be 9″, which is 9 1/2″ before finishing.)

Choose 7 fabrics, 1 red, 3 gray and 3 cream.

Cut: (Cut sizes include a 1/4” seam allowance.)

Fabric 1 (red):

6 squares, 2” x 2”

Fabric 2 (gray):

1 square, 2” x 2”

Fabric 3 (cream):

1 square, 2” x 2”

Fabric 4 (gray):

1 rectangle, 2” x 3 1/2”

1 rectangle, 2” x 5”

Fabric 5 (cream):

1 rectangle, 2” x 3 1/2”

1 rectangle, 2” x 5”

Fabric 6 (gray):

1 rectangle, 2” x 6 1/2”

1 rectangle, 2” x 8”

Fabric 7 (cream):

1 rectangle, 2” x 6 1/2”

1 rectangle, 2” x 8”

1. Sew the fabric #2 gray 2” x 2” square to a red 2” x 2” square. Sew the fabric #3 cream 2” x 2” square to a red 2” x 2” square. Press toward the red. Sew the cream and gray units together offsetting the red squares. Press using the “split seam” method. (See split seams tutorial.)

2. Sew the fabric #4 gray 2” x 3 1/2” rectangle to the top of the block. Press toward the pieced unit. Sew the fabric #4 gray 2” x 5” rectangle to the right side of the unit as before, pressing toward the pieced unit.

3. Sew a red 2” x 2” square to the right side of the fabric #5 cream 2” x 3 1/2” rectangle, and the fabric #5 cream 2” x 5” rectangle, pressing toward the red. Sew the 3 1/2” cream unit to the left side of the block, matching the seams. Press toward the cream unit. Sew the 5” cream unit to the bottom of the block, matching the seams. Press toward the cream unit.

4. Sew the fabric #6 gray 2” x 6 1/2” rectangle to the top of the block. Press toward the block. Sew the fabric #6 gray 2” x 8” rectangle to the right side of the unit as before, pressing toward the block.

5. Sew a red 2” x 2” square to the right side of the fabric #7 cream 2” x 6 1/2” rectangle, and the fabric #7 cream 2” x 8” rectangle, pressing toward the red. Sew the 6 1/2” cream unit to the left side of the block, matching the seams. Press toward the cream unit. Sew the 8” cream unit to the bottom of the block, matching the seams. Press toward the cream unit.
