I love the designer I’m highlighting today! In fact, if I could be any designer, I’d be Sue Spargo! I love her gorgeous, whimsical designs. Sue specializes in wool quilts, with wool appliqué and embroidery, ribbon and other embellishments. She has the most beautiful hand-dyed wool fabrics, along with threads and ribbons to make her quilts spectacular. Her designs are colorful, and so fun!
Sue is a busy gal, and does a lot of traveling and teaching. She lives in Ohio, but goes all over the country, and to Canada. She’s even doing “Adventures in Italy” next May, along with trips to France, Spain and even a Mediterranean cruise in 2016!
Sue has a new coffee-table book of her designs coming out in November. It is called Stitches to Savor. It is published by Martingale & Co., my publisher. The photos look wonderful, and there are lots of close-ups of her wonderful work. She also has a wall-art calendar for 2016, also with Martingale & Co.
Here are a few of Sue’s great quilt kits, available on her website:
This next one, Earth n’ Twig, I have quilted for a customer. No photo can show the absolute gorgeousness of the blue wool backgrounds! They’re so rich and beautiful!
Here are a couple of close-ups from that quilt:
I love this one, with its elephant and all!
Sue also does small kits, bags and pillows, etc. Here are a few of my favorites:
Here’s the pattern I just finished. It is called Crimson Tweed. Here’s Sue’s version:
And here is my version, fresh off the long-arm machine! I used cotton prints for my backgrounds, and used a lot of batiks and wool for the appliqué. I also used some variegated threads for the embroidery and wool appliqué. I loved the way it turned out! It just needs binding. (Oh, yeah. And trimming.)
Hope you enjoyed this little sampling of the wonderful world of Sue Spargo. Sue, you’re my hero and I’m definitely a wannabe! Check out Sue’s website, if you haven’t already.
