Do you love paper piecing for making quilts? Do you like the way paper piecing looks, but don’t really know how to do it? There is a tool that makes paper piecing easy and simpler to understand. It is the Add-a-Quarter ruler, and it is one of my favorite tools.
Paper piecing is a great way to get accurate seams when sewing odd angles or sharp points. Here’s a great tutorial on paper piecing from Martingale & Co., my publisher. It shows the basics of paper piecing, with great illustrations.
The Add-a-Quarter makes the trimming to 1/4″ much easier, and faster. It has a lip edge that rests on the edge of the paper after you’ve sewn that gives you that perfect 1/4″ by folding the paper where you’ve just sewn. (See the photo above.) Here are some cool-looking blocks using paper piecing:

So, if you’re an avid paper piecer already, or you just want to get started, do yourself a favor and pick up an Add-a-Quarter at a local quilt shop!
