One of the most basic tools for quiltmaking is the rectangular cutting ruler. I like the Omnigrid rulers, because they have a bright green highlight around the black lines, so its easy to see on dark or light fabric. They have a non-slip surface on the back, so they stay put.Another great one is the Creative Grid rulers. Theirs have gripper dots on the back so they don’t slip. It is also pretty easy to read while cutting.
My favorite rulers are the 24″ x 6 1/2″, and the 12″ x 6 1/2″.I tell my beginning students that you can really make almost any quilt block with these two rulers.
The most important thing about your basic rulers is to find the one that you like the most. I always reach for these two! But I do have quite a few other rulers, of course. (I am a quilter, after all!)
Oh, yeah! Also, pay attention to the title of this post! It saves me from so many headaches. (Or rather, I have caused myself so many headaches from not following my own advice!)
So happy cutting, and enjoy your own hunt for the perfect tool!
